ROANTREE WEAVES
Ann Roantree is a Philadelphia-based custom weaver specializing in the design and weaving of wool rugs, floor runners and interior textiles. With a thirty year background in fashion and architecture, Ann has been weaving for over ten years. She provides custom design and weaving services directly to clients, architects and interior designers.
“I am particularly attracted to the design potential of reversible or double-sided textiles – whether they are true double or triple cloth or block weave structure. Textiles are often considered to be flat or two dimensional. Multi-layered pieces, however, are anything but that. They compel the designer to think in plan and section in order to exploit the potential of the loom and push design.”
Ann draws inspiration from a variety of sources. Her designs are influenced by the mathematics of music composition, the straightforward functionality of mid-century and modern architecture as well as works of Modernist, Bauhaus, Abstract Expressionist and Color Field artists and the myriad of anonymous weavers of the American Southwest, Africa, the Silk Road, and Cusco schools.
And because all of her work is typically custom designed for a particular client and setting, the resulting weaving is also strongly influenced by and a reflection of her relationship with each of her clients.
Loving the design potential a large format wool rug offers, Ann’s primary focus is rug weaving. However, colors, fibers and centuries-old weave structures are combined and interpreted to produce work at a variety of scales ranging from custom rugs to floor runners, wall hangings, room dividers, and window treatments to tabletop linens, throws, pillows, coverlets and upholstery fabrics.
All design and weaving is performed by Ann. Rugs are typically linen warp and wool or wool blend weft. Other interior textiles are woven in a variety of natural fibers such as cotton, fine linen, wool, and silk. To the extent possible, all fiber is made in the United States or from North and South American sources.
As old as Spider Woman, weaving is an ancient, yet still relevant, technology. The creation of well-designed, durable, functional textiles has long been held in high esteem in all cultures.
